Oil change – the lifeblood of your engine
The right engine oil at the right time keeps your engine clean, reduces friction wear and cuts fuel consumption. MAX1 Bílavaktin carries out oil changes on all types of vehicle, whether they use conventional oil, advanced full-synthetic oil to manufacturer standards, or special long-life blends that meet car manufacturers' long-life specifications.
When should you change the oil?
Manufacturers generally recommend an oil change once a year or every 15.000-20,000 km (whichever comes first). Icelandic conditions – short journeys, rough and hilly roads, changeable weather, dust, ash and big temperature swings – often call for more frequent servicing:
- Standard petrol and diesel cars: Change every six months, or after half the mileage the manufacturer recommends (usually 7.500 - 10,000 km).
- Synthetic / long-life systems: Change every twelve months, or after about 20,000 km.
- Cars with an Intelligent Oil Life Monitor:
- Keep an eye on the oil warning light on the dashboard and change the oil as soon as it comes on.
- Bear in mind that this is not the usual service light, which only counts time or kilometres – the sensor assesses the actual condition of the oil.
- Severe conditions (e.g. frequent driving on loose gravel, big swings in cold temperatures): Manufacturers often recommend halving the service interval in such conditions.
Remember: the oil level also needs checking regularly. Check the dipstick between services and top up if needed – it's cheap insurance for a healthy engine.
Of course, it is always up to the car owner how often they change their car's engine oil.
