Find the right blades
Trico
Trico launched the first mass-produced wiper blade in 1917 and has been making wipers for more than a hundred years. The company also introduced the automatic wiper motor (1921) and the windscreen washer (1936). The blades are developed as original equipment for car manufacturers, and those standards carry over to the blades you buy off the shelf. That is why Trico is the range MAX1 keeps in stock — one brand that covers almost every car on Iceland’s roads.
Where is Trico made?
Its headquarters are in Rochester Hills, Michigan, in the United States. Trico runs factories and sites in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, with more than 2,500 employees.
Quality
Production is certified to ISO 9001 and IATF 16949, the automotive industry’s quality standard, and environmental management to ISO 14001. Trico has received supplier quality awards from car manufacturers such as Ford, Volkswagen, Porsche, Chrysler and Subaru.
Force+ — a flat blade with even pressure
Force+ is a flat blade (a beam blade): a single curved spring instead of the old steel frame with joints. That matters in Iceland. A frame blade collects slush and salt in its joints, freezes solid and lifts off the glass in the middle — which is why the streak always appears in the same place. A flat blade has no joints to freeze and applies even pressure along its whole length, even on curved windscreens.
The blade has a graphite-coated rubber edge that reduces friction, so it neither judders nor squeaks, and a protective cover shields the spring from salt. The fitting is included: Force+ comes with pre-installed adapters for the most common arms — hook, push button, side pin and bayonet — so the same blade fits most cars.
Rear blades
The rear wiper is easy to forget until you reverse in the dark. Trico makes dedicated rear blades for every fitting, and the search above tells you whether your car uses a rear blade and which one.
When should you change your wiper blades?
The rule of thumb is once a year, and autumn is the right time: the blades go from summer into darkness, rain and salt. Change them sooner if you notice any of these:
- Streaks and smears left behind with every wipe.
- The blade judders or squeaks instead of gliding.
- Areas that are not wiped, usually in the middle of the windscreen.
- The rubber is torn, stiff or shiny when you run a finger along it.
- Haze or smearing against low sun — the blade is smearing rather than clearing.
Worn blades are more than a nuisance. A hardened edge drags grit and salt across the glass and scratches it, and the scratches flare up in oncoming headlights. A new windscreen costs many times more than blades. Visibility in the rain.
