The new Nokian Hakkapeliitta 01 has been named the best studded tyre in an extensive test by the Swedish car magazine Vi Bilägare. The tyre scored 92 out of 100 and took first place with outstanding results in demanding winter conditions.
Full marks on ice and snow
Hakkapeliitta 01 scored 35 out of 35 possible points on ice and 25 out of 25 on snow. With 92 points overall, it won the test.

Its performance on ice drew particular attention. Hakkapeliitta 01 had the best cornering grip on ice of the tyres that met the stud protrusion rules, and the testers also described it as the easiest tyre to drive on ice.
New stud technology proves itself
Hakkapeliitta 01 marks a new generation of studded tyres from Nokian Tyres. It features Double Action Stud technology, which responds automatically to temperature and driving conditions. In the cold, the structure stiffens and the studs protrude further to maximise grip; in milder conditions they can retract slightly, reducing wear on the road surface.
The tyre also uses two types of stud: centre studs designed for acceleration and braking, and shoulder studs that add grip in corners and when changing lanes. Hakkapeliitta 01 also has 3D sipes, Aramid-reinforced sidewalls in selected sizes and SilentDrive technology to reduce road noise.
The quietest tyre in the test
The new technology does not just deliver grip. Hakkapeliitta 01 was measured as the quietest tyre in the Vi Bilägare test, at both 70 and 110 km/h, and received the testers’ highest rating for road noise.
Vi Bilägare particularly highlights its combination of strong ice grip, good wet grip and low road noise. Handling on dry asphalt was the tyre’s main weakness — but when all 13 test categories were added up, the result was clear.
