The new Nokian Hakkapeliitta 01 has been named Best Studded Tyre in a comprehensive studded tyre test by the Swedish car magazine Vi Bilägare. The tyre scored 92 out of a possible 100 points, taking first place with outstanding results in demanding winter conditions.
Eight studded tyres were put through 13 different tests on ice, snow, and wet and dry asphalt. The test was carried out on tyres in size 215/65 R17.
Outstanding grip on ice and snow
The Hakkapeliitta 01 scored 35 out of a possible 35 points on ice and 25 out of 25 on snow. With 92 points overall, it won the test, ahead of the Goodyear UltraGrip Arctic 2 with 89 points and the Michelin X-Ice North 4 with 81 points.
Its performance on ice attracted particular attention. Among the tyres that complied with the stud protrusion rules, the Hakkapeliitta 01 had the best cornering grip on ice, and the testers also described it as the easiest tyre to drive on ice.
New stud technology proves itself
The Hakkapeliitta 01 marks a new generation of studded tyres from Nokian Tyres. It features Double Action Stud technology, which responds automatically to temperature and driving conditions. In the cold, the structure stiffens and the studs protrude further to maximise grip, while in warmer conditions they can retract slightly, reducing the strain on the road surface.
The tyre also uses two different types of stud: centre studs designed with acceleration and braking in mind, and shoulder studs that increase grip when cornering and changing lanes. In addition, the Hakkapeliitta 01 features 3D sipes, Aramid-reinforced sidewalls in selected sizes and SilentDrive™ technology to reduce road noise.
The quietest tyre in the test
The new technology doesn't just pay off in grip. The Hakkapeliitta 01 was measured as the quietest tyre in the Vi Bilägare test, at both 70 and 110 km/h, and received the testers' highest rating for road noise.
Vi Bilägare particularly highlights its fine balance of strong ice grip, good wet grip and low road noise. Handling on dry asphalt was the tyre's main weakness, but when all 13 test categories were added up, the result was clear: the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 01 is the best studded tyre in the Vi Bilägare 2026 test.
