Nokian Hakkapeliitta 01 is the world's first studded tyre that adapts automatically to temperature and road conditions. It is available for cars and SUVs and is also suitable for EVs and hybrids.
The right grip from Hakkapeliitta 01 for changing conditions
The tyre is built on Double Action Stud technology: the studs switch automatically between two positions depending on the temperature, with no controls or buttons.
- In the cold the tyre stiffens and pushes the studs out — for maximum grip on ice and snow.
- In milder weather the rubber compound softens and the studs retract. This improves driving on bare and wet roads and reduces road wear, driving noise and vibration.
This automatic function makes the tyre simpler, more reliable and more cost-effective to manufacture, without compromising performance.

The tyre comes in sizes for cars and SUVs and carries both the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake and Ice Grip markings.
Best studded tyre in the Vi Bilägare 2026 studded tyre test
Hakkapeliitta 01 was named the best studded tyre in an extensive studded tyre test by the Swedish motoring magazine Vi Bilägare. It scored 92 out of a possible 100 points and took first place for its performance in demanding winter conditions.
Eight studded tyres were put through 13 tests on ice, snow and wet and dry asphalt, in size 215/65 R17. Read more about the test.
A new generation of winter tyres
Hakkapeliitta 01 brings together a number of design innovations:
- Double Stud — two types of stud: studs in the centre for acceleration and braking, and studs on the shoulders for grip when cornering and changing lanes.
- Specially designed 3D grooves that improve stability and grip in deep snow.
- Aramid-reinforced sidewalls in selected sizes. Extremely strong aramid fibres increase durability and impact resistance, for example when driving into a pothole.
- SilentDrive™ technology, which reduces noise and increases driving comfort.
